Basic maintenance for any HVAC system requires an air filter change. Any HVAC company will tell you to change the air filters two times per year, but the truth is it really depends on the type of system you have and the environment in which you live. For example, if you have pets you may have to change air filters more than twice per year. Now that you know this information let’s dive into the different types of air filters you can purchase for your HVAC system:
- Fiberglass Air Filters: These are the most inexpensive air filter. With these air filters, lint and dust (large particles) are easily captured. Need to be changed more frequently because dirt buildup on the air filter will eventually find its way around the filter.
- Pleated Air Filters: Most HVAC companies have switched over to these filters instead of using fiberglass air filters. These filters can capture more debris and smaller debris, this is because they have a larger surface area, unlike the fiberglass air filter. Pleated air filters may be a bit more costly, but they last a long time and do not have to be changed as frequently.
- Washable Air Filters: A little more costly than your disposable air filters but are better for the environment. A washable air filter can save between 20-60 disposable air filters. It will last a long time if the time is taken to maintain this air filter.
- Electrostatic Air Filters: Washable air filters that are 10 times more efficient than disposable air filters. Traps up to 94% of dust and allergens. Higher cost but will last a long time.
- HEPA Filters: Type of pleated air filter that stands for the higher-efficiency particulate air filter. Can remove 99.9% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and smaller airborne particles. Require periodic cleaning and air filter replacement. Mainly used in commercial spaces, as well as residential homes.
- UV Light: Used to kill germs, viruses, mold spores, bacteria, and fungi as they pass through the air handler system. A strategically placed UV light is very effective at killing close to one hundred percent of these harmful pollutants. Usually placed within the air handler of your HVAC system. Ideally, the correct placement of the UV light is before and after the cooling coil.
They have a manufacturer life expectancy of one year but sometimes longer if installed correctly.
Basic HVAC maintenance can be easily overlooked that is why it is good to have a maintenance contract with an HVAC company. Call All-Tech Mechanical Heating & Cooling, LLC to have a service technician come to your home or business to give an estimate on an HVAC maintenance contract.
